You will see magnetic resonance imaging as well as fiberoptic videos showing the function of the breathing and vocal apparatus. The MRI recording was transferred onto a digital tape prepared for recording sound. This video was taken to a professional recording studio, where Chrissellene had to dub her voice singing the scales in sync with the digital MRI.
- 06.Instrumentalists
Your ability to hold out phrases will be longer and your sound will be more sonorous and richer. Your breathing will be enhanced when you learn the breathing commands. You will have clearer sound in all registers. This system help to focus on specific aspects of posture, breathing, the throat, soft palate, tongue, and jaw placement. In addition, Chrissellene's suggestions on phrasing, especially in using the breath to communicate musical ideas, have helped instrumentalists to become much better musicians.
Course Curriculum
Vocal Command 1 - Posture
It is essential to be constantly aware of the position of your posture. Every move of your head dictates if your vocal folds are free to function.
- Posture is the foundation for your breathing and vocal production
- You must have control of your body for optimal singing and speaking
Vocal Command 2 - Inhalation
The inhalation of the air is the ‘fuel’ your voice needs. Your air capacity dictates how much power and intensity your sound will have when you exhale.
- Full capacity of air gives you optimal airflow through the vocal folds
- Learn how to inhale most efficiently
- Learn how to regulate how much air intake you need.
Vocal Command 3 - Exhalation
The exhalation process is essential for the power and intensity production of your voice. When mastered, it is the absolute control of your airflow through the vocal folds.
- Develop vocal endurance and stamina.
- Master the absolute ability to project.
- Control of volume and dynamics.
Vocal Command 4 - Throat
The throat must have the flexibility to expand in order to attain optimal space and resonance.
- Learn how to avoid throat constriction and prevent tension or hoarseness
- Develop control of the throat for increased range and projection
- Understand how to shape the resonating space to create different tonal qualities
- As throat flexibility improves, breaks and cracks in the voice diminish
Vocal Command 5 - Soft Palate
Learn how to control your soft palate to go up or down.
- Learn full control of the soft palate in order to achieve a specific sound.
- Choose if you want a more nasal or non-nasal sound.
- Choose the musical style / character you want in a healthy manner.
Vocal Command 6 - Tongue
Front and back: The tongue is the hardest working muscle. When controlled and mastered, you will have predictable and consistent high and low notes. It forms your vowels and consonants.
- Form vowels and consonants optimally for clear diction.
- Predictable and consistent high notes.
- Power and projection in your low range.
Vocal Command 7 - Jaw
The jaw is a very strong muscle and must be controlled in order to achieve clear diction, consistent high and low notes.
- The jaw must be controlled in order to maintain consistency of sound.
- Achieve consistent high and low notes with the assistance of your jaw.
- The jaw assists with clear diction and vowel placement.
Lesson 8 - Centered Voice
Once you have mastered commands 1-7, now you must find your 'authentic' sound or what I call your 'centered' sound.
- Having even one of the command positions being used insufficiently or inadequately will throw off your entire centered sound and hence the foundation of your vocal production.
Lesson 9 - High Notes
Singing high notes is one of the most curious and mysterious functions for the voice, yet everyone wonders and wants to know how to sing predictable high high notes!
- You must apply the 7 vocal commands, if you wish to locate the cricothyroid muscle or CT for achieving consistent high notes.
- Of course you can sing high notes, and many do, without using the CT muscle.
- But singing high notes without the use of the CT muscle will not provide you with the consistency, reliability and endurance you seek.
Lesson 10 - Low Notes
Singing low notes is one of the most mysterious, yet sought out functions for singing.
You probably have been wondering why low notes sometimes have no volume. They are thin and airy and do not project. Obviously, all of you want that belt-chest sound for projection of your low notes.
This lesson is about teaching you how to sing low notes with power and projection and on command and at will. You will learn how to locate the thyroarytenoid muscle for projection!
Lesson 11 - Vowels
Properly forming vowels is critical to achieving optimal diction and articulation for speech and singing. You must have the 7 vocal commands in control before locating and using the muscles for vowels, correctly.
It seems counterintuitive to learn vowels so late in the process, but without all the above learned commands and muscles, you cannot form vowels accurately or correctly.
You will learn in this lesson how to use the tongue to form vowels.
Lesson 12 - Consonants
Properly forming Consonants is of critical importance for good diction, articulation and sustaining your ability to express a word.
The truth is that many of you have no idea if they are forming consonants correctly or not! Unfortunately, however, the natural tendency is for people to form most of the consonants with the back of the tongue and the throat.
You will learn how to form them properly.
Lesson 13 - Performance Mode Mindset
This is one of the most important lessons in this course. It is focused and aimed at helping you protect and shield your profession from you and your interfering emotions.
Do you think mastering vocal techniques is enough? Do you think mastering your profession is enough? Do you think mastering a skill is enough?
The answer is simply NO, NOT at all! You need to also have the ability to control your emotions that interfere with your vocal techniques, profession, and your skills.
Everyone, no matter what your profession happens to be, needs to learn how to become aware and accept that your emotions interfere, undermine, sabotage, and devastate the ability to maintain, and preserve any career.
Lesson 14 - How To Master The Commands
Now that you have learned all of the commands and the techniques, your daily and life-long focus will be on making sure you are applying them to everything having to do with your vocal production.
You have to focus on the commands daily at home, at work, and when you workout! The idea behind this lesson is to make the use of the commands and performance mode a second nature to you. In other words, to make these tools part of everything you do.
They should always be your-go-to tools and they should always guide your technique and state-of- mind.
You will be given exercises to master each command as well as how to apply them to music and scripts.
Lesson 15 - Need To Know
This lesson is all about what you need to know about the care of your voice. This lesson focuses on two issues: First, It is important to know how to care for your voice. We will be going through a list of many different requirements and options for you to use in order to protect and maintain your voice.
Second, I will present some of the most common vocal myths, that you need to toss out, eliminate and dispel.Y ou will no longer fall victim to superstitions, hand-me-down information or the false use of the imagination.
Lesson 16 - Advanced Exercises
This lesson is about going beyond the basics in using the vocal commands and techniques.
You are going to be given many advanced vocal technical scales to help you build and strengthen your voice. You are welcome, one you master the commands, to use your own vocal scales to exercise your voice as long as you apply all the vocal mastery techniques.
Lesson 17 - Conclusion
This course introduced you to the techniques of the 7 command -approach and how to combine them in order to achieve optimal vocal production. These techniques, as you have seen, used evidence-based, scientific-methods and relied on a deep knowledge of the anatomy of vocal production to build your voice.
The 7 command-approach has made you aware of the basic anatomy and muscles involved in voice production, which by now, you have built and can feel.
You have learned how to locate and identify these muscles, how to build and use them in a balanced and coordinated way, and now you understand their importance in voice production. You will go through a 'Cheat-Sheet' for you to review.
